15 A CAPTURED FRIEND

AS TIRED AS Zach and Buffalo Heart were, they took the time to brush the dried lather residue from each of their horses. Even Thunder let Zach brush him, the stiff clumps of grass he used felt good but being rid of the crusty dried lather felt even better to the tired animals. Zach had set a grueling pace trying to get further ahead of Black Eagle. Even after the men brushed the horses, most of them lay down in the meadow grass and rolled around.

Raven Wing hoped her husband would have success; they all did. Fresh meat would be a welcome treat. Boiling their jerky made a very good meal if you had hours to leave it in the pot. But on the trail traveling, especially as they tried to cover the ground as fast as possible, the hard, dry jerky never had time to get tender.

The light was nearly faded when Luna and Jimbo both left camp, running in the same direction that Buffalo Heart had gone. Raven Wing dropped both her knife and the lily bulbs and wild onion she was cutting up and stood, staring after the dogs. Only a moment later she turned and yelled, “Grizzly Killer, Running Wolf needs help, someone has taken him, but I cannot tell who.”

It took less than a minute for both Zach and Buffalo Heart to be mounted and riding downstream. Neither Ol’ Red nor Buffalo Heart’s gray gelding were saddled; both men just jumped on them bareback. In only moments they were out of sight and the other three women all gathered around Raven Wing.

Zach was the first to see blood in the trail, and not knowing whether it was Running Wolf’s they slid off the mounts and followed, leaving Ol’ Red and the gray right there. Only a few steps and they could both see that Running Wolf had followed the blood trail as well. When they saw the deer, they could see no one had started to gut it. It was at that same moment Zach saw the horse tracks crossing the trail, just as Running Wolf had. Like their partner had done, Zach and Buffalo Heart started following the tracks.

Zach had only taken a few steps when he stopped and went to his knees. Buffalo Heart hadn’t seen anything across the meadow, but he followed Zach’s lead and Zach whispered, “I figure Running Wolf followed this trail and it may have led him right into an ambush. You stay in the trees going up around the meadow and I will cross the creek. Hopefully, we will find where they are holding Running Wolf before it is too dark to see.”

Buffalo Heart fully understood Zach’s concern and with nothing more than a nod, he headed back into the trees far enough he could move without being seen. He had not gone more than a hundred yards when Luna silently appeared directly in front of him.

Zach crossed the creek, wondering how far away whoever had taken Running Wolf was camped.
